Lake Towada (Winter)

Good evening.
I wish to travel to Lake Towada during winter (January 4th), but I found that JR tohoku bus is not in operation at this time.
Japan guide website says that the only way during winter time is by rental car?
Is it possible for me to rent a car and drive to Lake Towada? Is it safe to drive there?
Which route should I take if I am to drive from Aomori station? Google map recommends taking either:
1. via 東北自動車道 and 国道102号線
2. via 県道40号線 and 十和田道
Any advice or alternatives to driving there is appreciated.

The Oirase Keiryu Hotel have a free shuttle for their guests from Aomori. You could check their website for details of winter hours.

Thanks for the reply. I did notice this, and also hotels like Towadasou directly at Lake Towada do provide shuttle service for their guests from Hachinohe.
The only issue is that I'm not a guest in any hotel there and am just planning to head there for a day trip to just enjoy the view.
