I would like to buy a new mobile phone while in Japan, for use when back home in Australia. Can I do this and if so any recommendation on where to purchase, posssibly Tokyo.

Dont buy mobile phones in Japan. Mostly they are sim locked to their country, having it sim unlocked cost an extra fee.
Totally not worth it, just scrape some extra bucks buy it in Australia with some kind of binding pay
