Is JR Pass worth it? 2018/1/6 02:28
Hi! We are planning a trip to Japan this March and would like some insight regarding the best way to travel from place to place. We would be touring in Osaka-Kyoto-Nara-Tokyo for 10days. We would spend 6days at Kansai area, then proceed to Tokyo and stay there for 4days. Would it be economical to buy a JR pass. Or would be better if we buy a Kansai Thru Pass then buy a Tokyo subway ticket separately. Another option is the Suica card. Is there anyway we can maximise the trip and save at the same time? I hope you can help us in this matter. We would really appreciate it. Thanks.

No JR nation pass will work. Too little long distance travel.

Daily passes should work for some days, but it will depend on your travels. Using simple available tool like google maps and hyperdia to calculate your fares will give you an idea of what each day will cost.

for example a kansai thru pass equals 1733 yen per day. So you need to travel over that each day to make the pass worthwhile. For example Kyoto to Osaka is 400 yen, plus 120 yen each time you travel on the subway. So you'll most likely not need a pass.

Going out to Nara costs about 2200-2500 return for the day, so it will work for a Nara day trip.

If you're entering Japan through KIX, you could get the Haruka & Icoca combo.

Passes in the Kansai area are rather hard to make worthwhile...but if visiting Himeji for a day, a 1 day Kansai Area Pass would be worth it. You might also consider the Hankyu Tourist Pass, but its coverage is limited.

Within Tokyo, the 2 or 3 day subway pass is a good way to save money.
