Any mobile wi-fi for low budget travellers? 2018/1/17 12:22
I am wondering if there is any inexpensive mobile wifi just meets my basic need. I mainly will be using chat app such as whatsapp to keep in touch with my family while I am in Japan(I am traveling alone).
I heard the price for pocket wifi in Japan is around 500 yen to 800 yen per day. But as I will not use that much data, so I am thinking if there is cheap mobile wifi rental for the light user.
Also, it would be great if I can pick up and start using it after I arrive at Narita Airport.
Thanks:-)

Cheapest I've found is ToCoo: https://wifi.tocoo.jp/en/

500 yen per day, but no extra charges after Day 9. Can pick up from post office at Narita Airport, or have it sent to your hotel if you arrive after the post office is closed.

If you plan to rent close to one month, or more, try this place that rents for less than 200 yen per day.

If you are a budget traveler. Then don't rent a mobile wi-fi. Just about every hotel has wi-fi. Wait until the end of your day or the beginning of you day to talk to your family.

I have tried those free wifi which are available evrywhere, in most cases I cannot connect to them, for the op's case, why not just buy a data sim, it's much cheaper.

Hi Jesse. I'm a Japanese working in Tokyo for over 10 years.
Although its a SIM card, this article may meet your needs.

A summary of this article is: With WAmazing app, data communication can be made for free up to 500 MB in 5 days

Foreigners visiting Japan can receive free SIM card at Narita airport.

But be careful. After the 5 days, you no longer use is for free but pricey.

I personally think -- long of short of your Japan stay -- that you'd better renting a pocket WiFi router for secure and stable connection with the internet.

And if you find that some trouble with the device, some of rental providers give you a full refund which no prepaid SIM cards can do. *You need to make an inquiry to make sure such refund is okay or not.

Lastly, I put a (almost) comprehensive comparison lists of Japanese SIM Card/pocket WiFi router providers so that you can search until you are satisfied with.

Hope you'll have a wonderful experience in Japan.

If you are a tourist download the free app http://www.ntt-bp.net/jcfw/en.html which lets you connect to free wifi spots. I found that there were plenty of them in the major cities.

It might be cheaper to check with your local phone carrier than having to deal with Japan over price wifi or SIM card rental because your a traveller.

Check with T-Mobile and I believe Walmart also sells Sim Card for Japan those a Japan company for a deal. Don't know what country your from.
