Private hot spring mixed genders

If a hotel offers private hot spring reservations, can it be for mixed genders? Or must everyone in the party be the same gender? Also is there a minimum or maximum limit for how many people? I'm going away for my anniversary, so it will just be me and my fiance.

Normally private ones do not have gender rules.
Number of guests depend on the hotel. You need to ask the hotel.
But all baths I have seen as private are for two or more people. Never seen a one person bath yet.

I strongly recommend you Hakone Kowakien Yunessun-regarded as hot spring for mixed genders. it has a hot spa leisure facility, described as a gHot spring theme park,h and numerous unique baths please couples and families. The facility is divided into zones to be entered with bathing suits on and zones to be entered without any clothes on. The main facility of the amusement zone where you wear a bathing suit is Aegean Sea, which is a large-sized spa.

The very idea of a private bath in an onsen hotel is, that you can enjoy it with your family, so mixed sex. You normally can rent it for a time like 1 h (depending on each Ryokan) and there might be a first- come-first-serve rule. In some ryokans you need to pay for the private onsen.
Number of people admitted to the privat bath depends on each Ryokan, but as it is normally for families or groups or f friends, Ifd guess that 4 is the absolute minimum. More likely. But if you are only 2 or even if you are alone, you can still rent it.
Communal onsen however are normally more varied so for me more enjoyable.
Enjoy your trip to Japan!

If it's a private onsen, and it's a paid one, it's upto you to decide the amount of people who can use it, but the size will also depend on the amount of people who can use it, but you can't go too far, as to a 3 person size and you are trying to fit 6 person in.
Why not just reserve a room with a in room private onsen, but they do cost more.

Solo travelers can reserve a private onsen. When I visited Zao, I wanted to see what one was like and I reserved one for a fee as a solo traveler. Sure the onsen I used could hold more people, but as long as I paid the rental fee, no one cared that I was solo. Usually there is a limit based on the size of the onsen in question. I've seen a lot that are for 1-4 persons and I've seen some that are 1-6. I think ones for groups bigger than 6 are not quite as easy to find.
A lot depends on where you are traveling in terms of what is offered. Some ryokan private onsen are free to reserve, some there is a fee. Some are for guests at the ryokan only, and some any day tripper can reserve.
Yunessun (the place referenced in Kowakien in Hakone) is touristy and fun. The bathing suit side is mixed gender and very theme park. There is a naked part as well, which is gender segregated (Mori no Yu.) I don't know if they had reserved baths since I've only gone to complex with friends who are women like me. When I went in March there were a lot of couples. I've also gone other times when there are more children. I think it depends on whether it is a break time. I think when I went in February '10 it was just very quiet lol I've not been since then.
There are ryokan where each room has a private onsen attached to the room. They seem to be quite common on Kyushu based on the number of places I've seen offering this. Good luck and enjoy your anniversary.
