What are you after? There are many apps for tourists and travelers, from restaurants in Tokyo to offline maps like MAPinr and there is an app to help you get around the Chichibu 34 Kannon temples pilgrimage :-)

for iOS users, two essential apps:

Tokyo Rail Map Lite by Urban-Map
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tokyo-rail-map-lite/id503098185?mt=8

Tokyo Metro Subway Map and Route Planner by Mapway Limited
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tokyo-metro-subway-map-and-route-plann...

Keep those apps in your phone/tablet, and from an experience they both worth to buy.

Tabelog for food. 食べログ
Tenki.jp for weather
Imiwa for single word translation
Google translate (potentially download Japanese)
Jalan じゃらん for hotel booking
ゆーゆ for supersentos

These at least were useful to me.

Enjoy your trip to Japan!
