Unfortunately most of the trails are closed due to the volcanic activities.

This is the map showing the "open" trails (green) and the "closed" trails (red). This is only in Japanese but you can compare it with the google map of the same area. Climbing Onaminoike and Karakunidake is now prohibited. You can do some hike around the lakes but the route is restricted.

Konichiwa!
Thank you very much! Your information helps me a lot to plan my trip!

The trails around Aso volcano and up to Naka dake (highest mountain of Kyishu) are open, are they?

Thanks and best regards
Betty

From 3 Mar, it is prohibited to go around 1 km from the crater.

The map is here.

Dark red line denotes the 1 km line.

But the situation might change when you visit.

Konichiwa!
Thank you so much for the information! What has happened to Aso volcano? Was there volcanic activity lately? So they close and open the area every few days?

You seem to know a lot about volcanos. Can I climb Mount Nakadake close to Makinoto pass (east of Okinawa Onsen)?

Thank you so much and best regards

Hi Betty,

No I am not a specialist of volcano. I am just a local resident of Kyushu so I feel some kind of obligation when Kyushu related question has no answer :).

What has happened to Aso volcano? Was there volcanic activity lately? So they close and open the area every few days?

In 2014, fifty-eight people died due to the eruption of Ontake in Gifu/Nagano border. It was not so big eruption, but since people climbed very close to the crater, so the result was a disaster. After that the government seems to be rather nervous about the volcanic activity. Even in this situation recent eruption of Kusatsu-Shirane mountain resulted in one death. I don't know what is happening in Aso, but the authority keep watching the activity and change the status accordingly I think.

Can I climb Mount Nakadake close to Makinoto pass (east of Okinawa Onsen)?

I think so. there seems to be no restriction for climbing Nakadake from Makinoto. Note that it will take about 3 hours one way.

Konichiwa!
It is really very interesting and helpful to learn so much from you about your island and your volcanos!
I am from Austria and very interested in volcanos. We do not have any in Austria but in our neighbour country Italy there are a few active ones. And I visited 2 active ones in Guatemala. 3 weeks ago I went to Ethiopia to see an active lava lake inside a crater.
Japan has so many volcanoes, so I thought I had to go to Kyushu.
What about climbing Mt. Unzen?
Best regards

We have many volcanoes here in Japan, but we have no kangaroos :).

Actually we are living on the volcanoes in Kyushu. If you look at the google map you can see many round shape lakes which are craters.

What about climbing Mt. Unzen?

There is Heisei-Shinzan in Unzen which is newly formed lava dome. You can not climb it but can see it rather closely from Fugen-dake. Google map shows the grayish color of Heisei-Shinzan which means this is new lava.

What has happened to Aso volcano?

It last erupted about 1.5 years ago. In late February, they finally opened the area around the crater again just to close it again a couple of days later due to strong gases.

Can I climb Mount Nakadake close to Makinoto pass (east of Okinawa Onsen)?

Unless there is too much snow (which I don't think is the case), all the trails on Mount Kuju should be open:

Konichiwa!
I studyed all the web pages you sent me. It is so exciting! Thank you very much! I am looking forward to climbing Nakadake and Mt Fugen. Hopefully Aso will be open. And I will skip Kirishima park and go to Yakushima instead....
I am from Austria not Australia. It is a pity but we do not have kangoorus in Austria - too cold in winter. I loved those animals when I saw them in Australia...
Thank you so much! Best regards

Hi Betty,

You travelled so many places! I have once been to Wien but it was only one night. I hope I can go there again and stay longer. I have not been to Australia actually :). Of course I want to go there.

Not so many tourist comes from your country to Japan, and I just wanted to say the kangaroo joke. Below is my favorite youtube video posted by an Austrian living in Japan.

Sorry to reply so late, but I was very busy... I can not understand what the Austrian is saying in the video, but it sound very Japanese for me. Is it good Japanese?

One day for Wien is not much. Maybe you can come again. If you need some information or want to meet, do not hesitate to write me b.hermanek

Yes his Japanese is quite fluent. He has some "foreign" accent, but I am not sure it is Austrian. Maybe it might be based on a certain Japanese dialect, but I can't specify it. And he is talking about "no Kangaroos" joke.

Yes, I agree. Because of the flight ticket restriction I could not stay more than 24 hrs at that time. Still Wien was very nice, but I want go there in the future and see a lot of places and immerse myself in the Wien atmosphere.

Re: Ebino Kogen hiking trails 2018/4/2 05:32
Hi Betty,

I am sorry but I have not received your e-mail at present. I will try to contact you via three way: this forum, e-mail and the contact form of this site.

In recent days, the ash fall is medium/heavy level. I am living 20 km west of Sakurajima and usually there is no ash fall here, but we have some (some visible ash on the car, etc). But it depends on the wind, so I canft predict it on Thursday to Saturday. Still, the car ferry wonft stop even the ash fall is heavy.
