A day trip to Kawaguchiko

I am planning to go to have a day trip to Lake Kawaguchiko this December 10. This is my first time going to Japan, and I am a little bit confused with what to expect and really need your advice.
1. If I am using the bus from Shinjuku Station, do I need to buy the ticket in advance? What is the best time to depart? Do I need to buy a day pass in Shinjuku station? Will The pass cover the admission or just the bus ticket? Or should I just buy the pass when we have arrived to the destination
2. When I have arrived in there, what place should I go first? Any recommendation for just a day trip? I have 2 kids, so I cannot have too much walking.
3. What time should we go home from there?
