Visiting Chichijima, recommended time

Hi,
I was a bit interested in visiting Chichijima, but since the ferry only operates once a week, I am not sure if it is worth the trip of staying two nights and returning (or I would have to stay for 9 days or so, not including the travel time to and from Tokyo).
If you carry luggage like a suitcase, where would you store it on the ferry? Check in like on an airplane or will I have to hug it in my economy berth?
