Can I smoke in Tokyo? 2018/6/25 16:50
Hello! Friends

I am a smoker. I will go to Tokyo next week. I need to know if it is okay to smoke in Tokyo. Is it legal? If not, will I be punished from government? By the way, If I cannot smoke cigarette, can I smoke IQOS? I heard that it is legal in Japan, right?

Thank you for your help.

There are different restrictions depending on the area in Tokyo, but it is OK, meaning, there are designated smoking areas.

Just be sure to look out for such designated areas; if you are coming for business, for example, the office building you visit might be completely no smoking indoors and might have a smoking area outside, or there might be a "smoking chamber" indoors on a certain floor. Some restaurants advertise smoke-free, so be sure to look around for signs/ask if they have any smoking section.

Also in certain parts of Tokyo, smoking while walking is prohibited, with a fine; which I believe is decent considering how close people walk by on the sidewalks and the risk of lit cigarettes brushing by small children. Again look out for designated smoking locations (a street corner with an ashtray) and stay there while you smoke standing.

There are smoking-allowed hotel rooms if you are booking your own room.

The areas where you are not allowed to smoke are well signed.
