Hokkaido by short drives, easy hikes 2018/7/11 08:51
What will be a possible itinerary for Hokkaido by car with only relatively short drives, of around 2 hours max. ?
For about 7-9 days (more or less) in the last week of September or beginning of October.
We will get there from Tokyo by air, so starting point should be around an airport.
Also, only relatively easy, short hikes.

Many Thanks! :)

There would be so many solutions. There are twelve airports in Hokkaido. Of which, Okushiri, Rishiri, and Rebun would be out. They are on an island and you insist on a car, though there are nice hiking courses in Rebun.

Sarobetsu is good, but Wakkanai is far from its nearby airport in Asahikawa. You could use Hahoro in between, but Teuri is also an island.

Hakodate is far from Chitose. But there are many popular destinations in between. Hakodate - Onuma Park - Toyako - Noboribetsu - Shikotsuko - Niseko - Otaru - Sapporo would be ideal, but for a more longer itinerary. You could skip some, but Onuma Park would be mandatory to go well with your limit of a two-hour drive. Toyako has many hiking courses. Noboribetsu has some courses to Gigokudani. Climbing to Mt Komagatake in Onuma, Mt Tarumae in Shikotsuko, and Mt Iwaonupuri in Niseko are all for beginners.

Climbing to Mt Hakuun in Lake Shikaribetsu near Tokachi Airport is also popular.

There are hiking courses both in the directions to Tsurumi and Teshikaga in Kushiro Marshland. Kushiro Airport is nearby.

There are some hiking courses in Odaito near Nemuro. Climbing to Musadake, Nishibetsudake and Mashudake are all popular. Nakashibetsu Airport is nearby.

Shiretoko has Shiretoko Five Lakes. Lake Rausu also has a hiking course. Memanbetsu and Nakashibestu both works for Shiretoko.

Akan-Mashu National Park is among Memanbestu, Nakashibestu and Kushiro airports. Climbing to Mt Meakan from Lake Onneto and Mt Oakan from Lake Akan are both popular.

The remaining are Monmbestu and Asahikawa. Sangoso in Lake Notoro will be at a peak of Koyo until the end of September. It is also true in Kogen Onsen near Sounkyo. Here I try to visit these two.

D1: Monbetsu Airport-(1h8m)-Lake Saroma Tsuruga Resort
D2: -(30m)-Lake Notoro-(33m)-Yobito Peninsula-(1h8m)-Kussharo Prince Hotel
D3: -(1h1m)-Akanko Onsen
D4: -(22m)-Lake Onneto-(1h28m)-Nukabira Onsen
D5: -(1h35m)-Kogen Onsen-(44m)-Sounkyo Onsen
D6: -(1h47m)-Asahidake
D7: -(1h22m)-Tokachidake Onsen.
D8: -(53m)-Asahikawa Airport

Notes:
D1: You may stay at Lake Abashiri. Yobito Peninsula there is for hiking.
D2: There are Mt Io, Kaminoko Pond, and Lake Mashu in the region. You may stay in Kawayu Onsen, instead.
D4: You may go up to Lake Shikaribetsu for hiking there.
D5: You go through Mikuni Pass. Until Sep 30, you have to leave a car at Lake Taisestu. There is a shuttle bus to Kogen Onsen.
D7: Koyo in Bogakudai nearby is in season. There is also a good hiking course to Shirogane Blue Pond. You may visit Biei and Furano as well.

If you choose only one side, the pace could be slower:
Monbestu Airport - Lake Saroma - Lake Notoro - Lake Abashiri - Lake Kussharo - Kaminoko Pond - Lake Mashu - Lake Akan - Lake Onneto - Kushiro Airport,
or
Asahikawa Airport - Sounkyo - Lake Nukabira - Lake Shikaribetsu - Sahoro - Tomamu - Furano - Tokachidake Onsen - Biei - Asahidake - Asahikawa Airport.
