Would using this app in a store to translate a label on a shelf still be considered taking a photo? I know in Japan that many merchants do not want people taking pictures of their merchandise.

If you ask me, the bigger concern is that it barely works. I’m vegan, so I’ve attempted to read lots of food and drink labels with that thing and it’s just a bunch of gibberish.

They will misunderstood if you do not get permission as soon as you enter the store. Please study Japanese for permission, but Google Translate is primarily used for that purpose. "Excuse me, I would like to understand the contents of products and menus, so may I use the smart-phone translation apps inside the store?" すみません、商品やメニューの内容を理解したいので、店内でスマホの翻訳アプリを使用する事は出来ますか? This Japanese was corrected to perfect Japanese than Google Translate result, And for Japanese pronunciation, this site is more natural than Google Translate mechanical voice. http://voicetext.jp/But, default setting is a bit faster, you should slow down the play speed(速さ) from 100 to 90 or 80. However, it is enough to show this Japanese directly, though.

lol just use goolge translate. why ask permission, never did and sometimes they will ask what you do and you can explain and show.
Sorry but I do not want to ask permission every time I enter a store. If I want to take pictures there is noway they can stop me.

Never been kicked out, sometimes asked and if they dont like I dont do but go to another shop to buy. There are Japanese people who do more worse things in shops.
I guess people should not make a big issue.
