Int'l phone plan w/ a pocket wifi? 2018/9/27 14:55
Hello!

I got a $60 AT&T plan when I went to Japan two years ago because I was worried about emergencies even though my AirBnB host provided a pocket wifi. I'm going again soon and need to rent a pocket wifi, which I'll pick up at the airport, so I'm wondering if a plan is even needed. I'm using the same iPhone 6 that I used before.

Thank you!

Hi, Ninja Knight. I'm Japanese working in tokyo for over a decade.

Let me answer to your questions.

>need to rent a pocket wifi, which I'll pick up at the airport

Most of rental WiFi providers in Japan deliver a pocket WiFi router to the airport.

Some deliver to a custom counter, some deliver to the postbox at the airport. So, you don't need to worry picking it up at the airport.

>I'm wondering if a plan is even needed.

I think that preparing enough is important for your comfortable travel.

>I'm using the same iPhone 6

With iPhone 6, it practically grabs most of frequency bands in Japan.

Lastly, I put a chart that help you to compare WiFi plans.

You can buy local simcard at the airport or electronic shops
All major airports have WiFi Rental shops.

Depending on your needs you can choose the suitable plan.
If you want to use only google maps, using internet, sending pictures etc.

Also often convenience stores provide WiFi access
