Overnight between Niigata and Nou (Itoigawa)

Hi,
We'll be travelling by train from Aizu Wakamatsu towards Nou ( Itoigawa) in mid Feb.
We'll have an afternoon and evening to look around. Can you recommend an overnight town & or hotel/accommodation. I was looking at Niigata City or Naoetsu, but would appreciate any suggestions. If there are any snow festivals nearby, that would be great.

Thank you for your suggestion. It looks interesting but I checked on Hyperdia and getting from Yahiko to No by train requires several changes. Ifll keep in mind for future travels.
