Where to live in Kanagawa 2018/11/8 09:52
My husband got a job in Shin Yokohama and we are looking at apartments there. We have never been there so it would be much appreciated if anyone has any suggestions as to areas nearby we can live. Seems like Shin Yokohama is quite a pricey area to live in so we are looking at 1 hr commute radius. Thanks in advance.

Town name "Shin-Yokohama" does not mean "New City" to replace "Yokohama station" and around,
just because "Shin-Yokohama" is attached to the stop of the "Shinkansen" line "新(Shin = new)".

The blue circle that I wrote in the edited rail map is a big city,
there are two major flows in the flow toward Yokohama station which is the center of Yokohama city
and the city center in Tokyo (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Shinagawa, Tokyo station etc.) on the upper right.

Although only the orange circle is not a good area,
it is not limited to Japan only if the big town has many rental properties.
This is the original rail map. (larger one, 4000 x 3097 px)

Depending on the company's transportation expenses,
it is also possible to choose "Shinkansen" to avoid commuting rush from "Odawara".

"Tokyo" that the Japanese imagines means "23 wards of Tokyo (middle wards of Tokyo)",
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_wards_of_Tokyo
but foreigners who do not know Japan distinguish
btw "Tokyo" and "Kanto(Tokyo and around as bed town)" do not understand.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Tokyo_Area
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transport_in_Greater_Tokyo
Although it is an easy reason if studying the history of Tokyo and its surroundings,
the place where there is the present "Imperial Palace" is the site of "Edo castle"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Imperial_Palace
built about 420 years ago, and the town radiates in the center of Edo castle.

Anyway, it is a matter to consult the company, ASAP.
In Japanese common sense, the rent is ideal within "1/3" of income.
Because humans can not live without eating,
the areas with supermarkets(grocery store) and shopping mall where food items are cheap
are also popular following the stops of faster rapid and commuter express trains.

And it is not a moving season now, there are not many good properties.

Re: Where to live in Kanagawa 2018/11/9 10:00
Ronald,
Thank you for your reply. We are actually already living in Japan. Just in a different prefecture, so we are a little worried about the difference in cost of living.

WomaninSidoniaS2Ep6,
Thank you for the detailed reply. The train maps are extremely helpful! One question:

"Although only the orange circle is not a good area,
it is not limited to Japan only if the big town has many rental properties."

So I should NOT look at the areas circled in orange?

Re: Where to live in Kanagawa 2018/11/10 01:12
I live in (long) walking distance from Shin-Yokohama. The area is relatively pricey especially when you look between Shin-Yokohama and Okurayama stations. But it's not necessarily so in various spots that are commutable to the city center.

Have you discussed it with a real-estate agency? I'm sure you will find many affordable places. If you can commute for an hour, there are dozens of station neighborhoods along the JR Yokohama Line or the Municipal Subway or one of the many bus routes.

But you have to remember that Greater Tokyo is general pricey compared to other parts of Japan. Meanwhile, the wages tend to be higher than other parts of Japan too. On a related note, I love Shin-Yokohama because it has everything and yet the city is not too big or crowded. I always go there when I need to go to a bigger bank or a bigger mall.

Perhaps someone can give you more ideas if you can narrow it down a bit more about your preferences. Anyway, you have too many options.

Re: Where to live in Kanagawa 2018/11/10 10:00
Hi Uco,

Thank you for your reply. Would a monthly take-home salary of 220,000 yen, excluding rent, be enough for two person to live in Yokohama? Will we be able to save any money? We don’t spend much but will have a car with us. We are currently looking at Den-en toshi line, Toyoko Line, Yokohama Line and maybe Sagami Line but there aren’t much properties available within our budget of 80,000 yen. Hopefully there are new rentals popping up in the next two weeks!

No, it means "There are many good towns besides the town of the Orange circle."
You can check the size of the town with Google street-view and satellite map.
https://goo.gl/maps/rTWd1BihaHt

Orange's circle towns are very convenient as commuting time being short
except "Odawara" which will be taken by Shinkansen(= Super Limited Express),
and also good for going to downtown of Tokyo and Yokohama on holidays and after work.

Also, I did not write it bc the previous answer is too long,
the meaning differs between "apart(ment) アパート" in Japanese and "apartment" in English,
also the meaning of "mansion(マンション)" is different in Japanese.

This is one of the important basic knowledge, be careful when searching.

In this simulation, the minimum line is 240,000Y including the rent(家賃: yachin) 80,000Y.

Re: Where to live in Kanagawa 2018/11/10 18:00
We are house-sitting for a friend in an apartment between Yokohama and Shin-Yokohama. It is really convenient, and the area is lovely. I don't know how expensive it would be to rent here, but there is a mix of property styles so you might find something to suit.

I was going to suggest thinking about somewhere on the Blue Line: the trains are very frequent and regular, and many of the stations connect to JR and private lines, making them very accessible.

We don't see too many other foreigners around here, but the locals are friendly and there is very good local shopping as well as both Yokohama and Shin-Yokohama if you want something a little bigger. Also a beautiful park for getting some outside time, weather permitting.

Hope the move goes well!

Re: Where to live in Kanagawa 2018/11/11 20:27
Thank you for your reply, Rin. Among those 4 lines, Toyoko Line and Yokohama Line are much more accessible to Shin-Yokohama Station, of course. So what exactly is the room rate you're looking for? How much are you paying now? Again, have you looked at ads at all? If you have, was there anything you were interested in? Please be a bit more specific.

I forgot to ask. Why those 4 Lines? And why not Blue Line?
