Lake Akan winter

Hi
Never been to Hokkaido during winter, nor have I been to the lake Akan area.
As i will be in Sapporo during winter festival I was thinking of visiting Akan lake. Not sure how it is to visit during the winter though.
Is it possible to do a daytrip from Kushiro or Abashiri? I do not drive car so I have to use the bus. Seems to be not so many busses leaving per day.
Maybe enter a guided tour?
