while planning my 27 day trip to japan.. i spend 2 days in Hiroshima then I head to Fukuoka.. originally, I have 2 night stay there, then from there i catch a train to Takayama for 3 days.. and so forth... I know Fuku is a long way from Taka.. so i was wondering is fukuoka worth the day and half? or should i just go straight from Hiroshima to takayama?

It's not so far there but a hell of a long way back to Takayama. Have you thought about somewhere mid way like Fukui or maybe Hikone? I was actually thinking of working Inuyama into my trip next year which is near Nagoya.

Thanks! Actually I'm not going to say that personally I wouldnt make the trip to Fukuoka because last time I said something that I made a number of people very upset it prompted a few comments which stung me a little. It is a bit like I've learned not to say that I find Matsumoto a bit meh (oops!). I suppose that I would say that if I was going to Fukuoka, one and a half days would be more than enough time for me, unless I was to rent a car and drive somewhere which I never do in Japan because I am scared of heights. Horses for courses though, Fukuoka obviously has some very devoted fans.
Agreed Hiroshima is a bit of a "must see". I didnt expect to be moved by it so it came as a surprise to me, although I didnt like the city iself which was under a yellow pall of smog. Miyajima off the coast though is very nice and touristy fun.
The plan from Hakata14 above makes more sense to me, and would avoid the massive travel day of Fukuoka to Takayama.

@Lazy Pious, I will say that :) I like Fukuoka, my last two trips have included time there and I was looking at prices of flights to there again last night. However As the OP is then heading to Takayama I would suggest not going there this trip. I would think somewhere between Hiroshima and Takayama would be a better option. Onomichi, Kurashiki, Okayama, Kobe, Nara & Hikone come to mind.

What did YOU expect from Fukuoka when you first put it into your itinerary?
There are good reasons to visit Fukuoka but similarly good reasons to eg spend the 1.5 days in Okayama, Himeiji, Teshima or a bunch of other locations including the countryside of OkuHida close to Takayama and relax in an onsen. Everyone of us has a different preference. Yes the travel day is going to be long, but you are going to be sitting in a Shinkansen all the way from Fukuoka (Hakata) to Nagoya. So unless your previous day is really close to Nagoya (or even already towards Takayama like in okuhida or Gero onsen) you are going to have a day dedicated to sitting on a train. Does it really make a difference if that is 2 h more or less?
Enjoy your trip to Japan!

Thank you everyone! Ifm still deciding, however, I feel an option is to tack on an extra day in Hiroshima /Miyajima then take a train to takayama.. that way there is no rush rush.. I would prefer a scenic route though. Is this a good ide?

It is certainly doable and it doesn't have to take that long. And yes, Fukuoka has some very good places to see, if you just know where to go. http://www.thejapanfaq.com/fukpic.htmlhttp://bit.ly/1KAm8cUThe Nanzoin Temple is one of the best in the country, and not overrun by tourists. There are some beautiful old villas and gardens as well. Dazaifu and Yanagawa are not far away either. As for going from Fukuoka to Takayama, you can get a cheap flight on Jet Star for as low as 5,000 yen to Nagoya, and catch a ltd express train the rest of the way. Or there is of course ANA's Experience Japan Fare for 10,800 yen http://ana.ms/20Xtf8tIf you insist on taking the train because you want to use a rail pass or whatever, then it gets more time consuming for you. There is probably more you can see in Hiroshima. Everyone stampedes to see the Peace Park & Museum, but far fewer go see the Shukkeien Garden, which is gorgeous. Plus almost nobody goes to see the hidden jewel, the Mitakidera Temple. Still unknown to the tourist mobs and gives a tranquil and peaceful experience that's getting harder to find with nearly 29 million people visiting Japan in 2017. https://youtu.be/J2PxquwlKJo
