Day trip or overnight stay in Alpine Route?

I wanted to know whats the best way to get to Alpine Route?
Ill be Leaving Kyoto for Tokyo and i have possibly a backpack or luggage with me. I wanted to do the Above the Clouds Hike & see the Snow wall.
i dont know if i should do a day trip from Tokyo and do it all in a day ? Or Go from Kyoto and do from that direction. But i will have my bags with me.
Can i store it somewhere? Can i do it in a day ?
Or should i stay overnight in a nearby town?
I plan on doing this first week of May.
