According to HyperDia (www.hyperdia.com) you're not going to make it to Hiroshima the night you land.
You land at 6:35 pm, let's say you deplane, get your luggage and clear Immigration and Customs by 7:30pm: Catch the 7:50pm Narita Express to Shinagawa, arriving there at 8:59pm. The Shinkansen leaves at 9:07pm and the furthest it goes is Shin-Osaka station. You then have to wait until 6am the next morning for the Shinkansen to Hiroshima.
There is the option of an overnight train though. 1) 8:47pm Narita Express to Yokohama Station arriving 10:14pm 2) 10:24pm Ltd. Express Sunrise Seto overnight train to Okayama, arriving 6:27 am 3) 6:51am Shinkansen Mizuho 601 to Hiroshima, arriving at 7:25am

thank you everyone..have confirmed my fears!...always worried that the flight may be late arriving..have experienced similar arriving at Kansai 2 hours late from Australia via Jetstar!!!.. had to stay at the Nikko Hotel in Kansai Airport till next morning... this trip in April I may stay in Shinagawa that night of arrival.. then move on the following morning at leisure.. thanks all!

It will not be difficult to reserve a hotel in April, but the kind of hotel or location may not be what you want. I sometimes book last-minute in Tokyo (well, not actually Tokyo - but nearby) and still manage to get something acceptable, but it would normally be more expensive than a pre-planned/booked hotel. Narita Airport hotels can be good value for evening arrivals - I target Y8k-Y10k for a double/twin with breakfast and leaving from there with a JRP makes sense with the free shuttles to the airport - have not done that for a few years, but guests have.
