Pocket WiFi or SIM card? 2019/1/31 08:49
Japan for about 28 days. I will be in several parts of the country. Pocket WiFi or SIM card for my iPhone is recommended?

It really depends on your own preferences. I don't like changing my SIM card, so usually get a pocket wifi; others don't like carrying the wifi unit, so prefer SIM cards. SIM is usually also cheaper.

My recent experience would suggest SIM card where you can buy additional metas as you go.

I used up 7GB of a WiFi which came with an apartment I was staying in less than 10 days. Okay some TCS and work mails.

My husband in summer last year also managed to use his WiFi up in about 3 weeks.

If that happens to you, you are w/o internet and need to get a new WiFi. While with Sims you can buy more as you go. (Depending on the type of plan you select).

One can get unlimited data on MiFi as well, as I usually do. I use Global Advanced Comm.

Hi, Bran85.

I'm a Japanese working in Tokyo for over a decade.
Let me answer to you from my experience and knowledge.

As someone already replied to you, it depends on your travel style and preferences.

So, I just put two (almost) comprehensive lists for pocket WiFi routers and data SIM cards with which you can compare several important things such as price, data capacitiy, and data speed.

SIM card
Phone compatibility,
phone setting may change due to swapping SIM card,
Only connect one device, your phone (unless your phone can do tethering)
Cheaper, only pay for SIM card.

Pocket wifi
connect your phone to wifi like normal,
no phone compatibility issue,
you need to carry extra (phone + pocket wifi)
more expensive since you pay for SIM and pocket wifi rental.
multiple device connection.

Connection wise both will be the same, maybe pocket slightly better.
Pocket wifi is good/cost effective if you travel in group, everyone just share one.

Thanks everyone. I think I will go with a pocket WiFi since my device isnft unlocked to use globally for a sim. Nevertheless.. global communication seems to be the best one out there but I came across Foxwifi which seems to be drastically cheaper. Anyone heard of these guys?

We used this one recently. No caps, no speed limiting, unlimited and fast. It also came with the powerbank which we used to charge our phones as well as the Wi-Fi unit. https://www.japan-wireless.com/en

Free WiFi spots? Forget them. There are some, but not enough to depend on. And when you do find a free WiFi spot, it's used to the max and you cannot sign on. Your hotel should have free WiFi, if that is all you need.

I read a forum comment that said to avoid Fox Wifi because their reviews are staged - they dug back into the IT specifics and found them to be fake. Take this as an alert that they shouldn't be trusted!

I've used a couple of different companies over my three trips, and am always looking for new deals, and have found this company to be cheap and reliable: http://www.gmobile.biz/softbank/inbound/ I used them on my last trip (July 2018) and had no issues, and plan to use them again this April.
