My visa has expired while my resident card is still valid. If I want to leave Japan, am I still be able to come back?

Most important is your period of stay expiry date on your zairyu card. If that date is passed, and you are still in Japan, you are now overstayer. Visa sticker on your passport is cancelled (stamped used) once you enter Japan with it. So Visa sticker date and Zairyu card expiration date is different item. So no problem leave and enter Japan if your zairyu card period of stay expiration date is still valid.

Your resident card expiry date should be linked to the actual visa (status of residence) that allows you to stay in the country. If your "visa" has expired and has a different date, maybe you are referring to a different category/type/document. I do not have a separate "visa", just the card. Same with other people I know in similar circumstances.

Breaking news: not everyone enters Japan visa-free.
