These kind of flags are what Japanese soldiers brought to the battlefield for luck, and they are typically filled with signatures of friends and acquaintances. The flag in your photo is not an exception, and on the lower right hand corner, with the icon, it says "lumber store". Perhaps the soldier had something to do with woodwork. The Japanese government is working hard to collect these flags so that they could be returned to the appropriate owners, which include the precious family of deceased soldiers.
