Cool japan 2019/2/19 04:18
Ifve lived in sunny California all my life, i am 45 years old now and in the recent years i have come to realize that the sunny weather is killing me. In the last five years Ifve visited Tokyo twice, once in the winter and more recently the summer time. My question is other than Hokkaido, where in japan can I find a place that is cool Year around? Snow, wind, rain; Ifve had it with the sunny weather draining my energy. If anybody has an answer for me please share. Arigatou

Look at a map. Note Hokkaido's geographical location.

Possible latitude and elevation might be helpful. As such - look for high locations up north.

Hi,
if you are looking for a place that is cold all year around in Japan, you should check the main ski resort areas in Japan (Niigata, nagano etc...), if you don't mind the isolation, as it is a bit far from the bigger cities.
I would still recommend Hokkaido the most as it is a mix of big cities and beautiful landscapes/nature. It can get really cold in Winter though so be aware of that (-29 deg C this week)

I hope that helps.

Closer to Tokyo, maybe Karuizawa or Nikko. Karuizawa in particular is pretty trendy, upmarket town (for Japan) and the average summertime temps are only 25 celsius

Cool down in Japan, only in winter period you can find it.
Summer period it can be 22 average but last year there was even 30 degrees (Global warming)

I think you should try Siberia where it can be still cold.

I do not know if this post is serious because you can not just move because you want to live in a colder area.

Thanks all of you, yes I visited Niigata on my first trip, I took the Shinkansen train and it snowed that night and yes itfs quite isolated. Ifm only trying to exclude Hokkaido because it would be an extreme, however if my health depends on it i will consider the realities of making such a big change. (To ni ka ku) I will look up the areas you guys mentioned and check the elevation in different regions and make an informed and educated decision on where I want to spend the next 20 or 30 years of my life. Thanks again everyone.

Are you assuming that Japan is going to let you move there just because you want to?

Well sir after traveling twice I think I know whatfs involved. Ifve studied Japanese language and received an associates degree in Japanese language and culture. In two years Ifll have my bachelors and Ifll be able to work there legally. The rest is strictly up to fate but yes I know whatfs involved.

Excuse the skepticism, this board attracts a lot of extremely naive people who think theyfre just going to hop on a plane and live in Japan. I hope it works out!

Work visa is one thing but I hear residency is even more tedious, nevertheless Ifm prepared to go the distance. I agree therefs s huge community of young people who have it in their minds that living in japan will be an adventure filled with ninjas and samurai robots but Ifve already had the experience of chasing down legal papers and searching out sponsors that will validate your work visa. Itfs enough to discourage you into leaving and never coming back.

Even if it is a young (or not) person with naive dreams, it would take a fairly miserable person to be rude to them about it. I'm glad that no-one crapped on my dreams in a public forum when I was a kid.

Wow so Ifm a miserable person if I think the people who assume you can just up and move to Japan as long as you have airfare should be informed that it doesnft work that way. I know if I was under the wrong impression like that, Ifd want to know sooner than later so I could start working toward the proper channels. You seem pretty nice, yourself, calling people miserable on a public message board.

Re: Cool japan 2019/2/21 06:17
Ifve had it happen before, Japan is such a hot ticket there are people just waiting for the next sucker to step up to bat so they can shoot him down. Within the process there are clauses and waiting periods and it can be quite a runaround. Youfll run into people whofll tell you gyou cannot go any furtherh because of a lack of paperwork, or you donft have a witness or sponsor and it can burn you out and embarrass you into a hole. On my second trip I tried to find a sponsor so that I could extend my stay and I found myself running around Tokyo like a chicken with the head cut off. Finally I decided to come back to California and continue working on my bachelors degree. A bachelors degree is a straight shot, you show them that and theyfll literally cream their pants:D and thatfs where I am now.

@Gregalor, re-read what you wrote and ask yourself honestly if you were polite or rude. Looks negative and miserable to me too.

Look, OP made a couple of posts that made it sound like the typical gIfm going to move to Japanh posts where the person thinks all you have to do is go there, rent an apartment, and now you live in Japan. I pointed out that pure desire wonft get you in. Which is what all of those people need to be told ASAP. gAre you assuming that Japan is going to let you move there just because you want to?h That is, gHave you thought this through and arenft possibly forgetting something?h A lot of people donft know that you have to convince a country to let you in, prove that youfre going to make some contribution. He clarified, I said sorry for the misunderstanding, he said yes I know why youfd make that assumption, and you two sound more upset about it than he does.

Re: Cool japan 2019/2/21 11:31
Yeah look, actually you werent the only one who was a bit smart about it. I may not have been talking about you at all (*coff coff) and sorry if it did upset you. But I can tell you that while I love this site, there are plenty of people who seem to take pleasure tearing down either the OP's or other posters. My favorite is when no one responds to an OP for a day, so someone then tries their best to help and then immediately they are savaged by someone else for their opinion. it looks as though they want to tell everyone how smart they are by showing how wrong the other person is.

I dont want to sound all holier than thou because I am probably the biggest smart a@# going around, but when someone comes here to ask a question I try to be very gentle if I can help. I've asked heaps of stupid questions in my time, I'd be mortified if the response was (reading between the lines) that I was an idiot.

Anyway, no drama.

No answer is better than a wrong answer, as a wrong answer can mislead the questioner and lead to unnecessary loss of time or money. Just because a question has not gotten an answer for a while does not make it okay to give a wrong answer. Wrong answers should always be corrected as soon as they are detected.

You mean gsnipingh? Incredible. I appreciate the answers I received from the first few that shared an interest in helping someone who is less knowledgeable about certain criteria and a little criticism doesnft hurt but therefs no need to take on personal grudges for something like an online forum thatfs superficial at best. You donft have to take any of this home with you, itfs just a better way for people to help each other out. Why some people are like that I do not know🤔
