Day trip (driving) from Shimonoseki 2019/2/23 11:02
I would like to hire a car in Shimonoseki and then drive to the Fukutoku Inari Shrine and then the Motonosumi Inari Shrine. Does anyone have any other recommendations for the area? I have previously visited Hagi and Tsuwano, and these seem a bit too far away for a day trip anyway. But if there are any other lovely sightseeing spots in the same general area as these two shrines, I'd love to know more about them. Thank you.

Mekari Jinja (Mekari Shrine)
As you will stay in Shimonoseki, you should visit a shrine on the opposite side of the Strait of Kanmon, just under the Bridge. You can reach there on foot, walking through the Kanmon Tunnel. Itfs not a picturesque nor touristic shrine like the shrines you now want to visit. The actual building itself, built in the 18th century, is certainly not so attracting. But, itfs one of the very old shrines, with memories of Japanese history and literature. Itfs, so to speak, a shrine visited by cultural and historical lovers. You should absolutely visit it at the the time of tide changes.

Akiyoshi-dō(Shūhōdō) and Akiyoshi-dai
The first is a limestone cave and the second a karst topography.
