Maybe you/student got confused/lost in translation with Taiiku no hi and Undokai, where both in English sometimes known as Sports Day.
Taiiku no hi is designated public holiday in Oct, whereas Undokai is a school event.
Certain part in Japan some school have in around May-June, where some do it in Oct.
Like my place up north, most school have Undokai in May, and then the neighbourhood community have own Undokai in Oct.
