Shinkansen hopping on Tokyo to Hiroshima trip

Overall trip is from Tokyo to Hiroshima. Is it possible to take the Hikari from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka then simply wait at the platform (or in the already-paid-for-my-ticket area of the station) for the Sakura to reach Hiroshima? Similar to jumping from a local train to an express by waiting on the platform.
This is assuming I have a JR pass.

Of course with a JR Pass you can hop on and off freely.
(This would also be possible on a regular ticket, by the way.)

Can also use reserved seating if you make a reservation beforehand.
