I was thinking maybe 7500y per day for the bigger cities and 6000 per day for the smaller cities (Hiroshima Toyama takayama) ??? Suggestions?

Is this including or excluding accommodation????
If it includes accommodation it sounds like a very tight budget as youfll spend this already in a cheap business hotel. I am not saying that there arenft more economical alternatives for accommodation but youfd need to search around.
If itfs for food and entrance fees only itfs a good budget. Obviously you can spend much more by visiting expensive or many attractions every day or by splurging on food. But you could probably come by 2000 Yen a day if you go cheap on food and only visit one paid attraction. (There are many places you donft pay anything. Like most Shrines and temples, cities....)
Enjoy your trip to Japan!

I went to Japan last had with my sister and we did quite some research on this subject. How much money would we need per day? We eventually came up with a strict budget for food and kind of strict for accommodation as well, and we managed to stick to those. Depending on how much activities you plan on doing during your stay and how much you plan on using the public transportation, Japan is not really that expensive. I wrote a whole blogpost about how much I ended up spending in Japan, it might be helpful for you to read. All together, I ended up spending almost 1500 euro in ten days. https://alovingladytravels.com/2018/11/03/travel-budget-for-10-days-ja...

Excluding airfares, accommodation and long-distance train travel, we usually estimate about Yen 10,000/day for the two of us. That covers meals, local transportation, entrance fees, snacks, coffee, konbini purchases etc. etc. and has generally worked over several Japan trips.

I don't see a problem with that budget for food, entertainment and souvenirs. You can find a lot of really interesting and good quality food around major train stations for 1000-2000y per meal, with maybe an occasional "splurge" meal around 5000y. Obviously if you like to drink alcohol often, your meals will be more expensive.
Entrance fees seemed remarkably cheap in Japan compared to places like the USA. Obviously check before hand for each place, but don't expect those to be a massive budget buster.
