Planning trip to Tokyo during the new year 2019/3/18 09:20
Planning trip Dec. 26, 2019 to Jan. 4, 2020. How are crowds during new year (visitors and locals) and will shops be open during that time?

Most things will be open in Tokyo over these times.

It's an interesting time to visit Japan - specifically to major shrines on New Years Day.

In general some stores and restaurants will be closed on New Years Day, but you won't notice it too much in Tokyo. Getting accomodation can be a little more difficult on the 31/12 than other days due to people travelling to see family.

Also note that some tourist attractions may be closed close to NY, but this depends on the location being visited. In general, the more rural the location the more likely that it's closed over New Years.....

There is also a page somewhere on JG that covers information about this time. someone might be able to link it below or you could also do a search
