Yamagata Sendai Tohoku 2019/3/19 22:43
Hi plan travel mid April for 5 days to Tohoku Region with JR East Pass (first time to Tohoku) Reading Yamagata, Sendai still reading ...

1. If can only go either Ginzan onsen or Zao. Which is better option for Apr ? As I do not know Zao can still see snow monster about 14 Apr?

2. Yamadera (temple)
A) look great for autumn, how about April is it good time to go?

B) from the base to observation deck take about how long?

C) Observation deck is the furthest u can go?

3. Any other places not to miss for April season. No museum.

Thanks!

1. Ginzan. Between the two, the only reason for Zao would be if you want to ski (and onsen would be a bonus after a day of skiing).

see snow monster about 14 Apr?
Not likely. Was there a 3 weeks ago, it was only 30% left then due to warm winter.
Ginzan would be a better choice, especially if you could stay overnight.

I'm sure there will be some good hanami (cherry blossom) spots in Fukushima near the ocean at this time. Others will know more on this...

1.If you go in April, I think Ginzan Onsen is good.
(Ginzan Onsen is beautiful whenever you go.)
Unfortunately, the ice season ends in March.

2-A.Yamadera is very good for hiking in Spring.
If you are lucky you will be able to see the wild cherry blossoms .

2-B.When I went to Yamadera, it took about one and a half hours on a round trip.
Two hours would be enough.

2-C.What you call the observation deck is probably Kaizan-do Hall and Godai-do Hall.
There are many buildings besides the observation deck.

3.In the middle of April, I think that the cherry blossoms of Yamagata's Kajo Park are in full bloom.
By the way, my recommendation is Hirosaki Castle. It is expected that the 22nd will be in full bloom.

Re: Yamagata Sendai Tohoku 2019/3/25 15:53
Sendai station is there also large size locker?

Rough Plan below (as trying to get orientation right), flexible to change:

1st day - Tokyo to Sendai station (leave luggage in locker) - explore Sendai then travel to Ginzan Onsen stay a nite

2nd day - Ginzan Onsen to Yamadera station (leave luggage in locker), go temple, travel back to Sendai stay a nite

3rd day - ?? :D still reading upper part of Tohoku, maybe Aomori or ? then back Tokyo by nite

Thanks

Sendai Station is huge, like Tokyo Station huge. Theyfll be able to accommodate your luggage.

If you are spending a night in Sendai, why not send your luggage to the hotel instead of leaving it in the locker a couple of times? Just have a change of clothes for Ginzan Onsen/Yamadera with you and not have to lug around your luggage.
