Driving to Okuhida Onsen Shin-Hotaka Onsen

We will be driving from Tsumago to Okuhida Onsen Shinhotaka Onsen and on to Takayama in about 2 weeks from now (early April). Looking at the weather forecast I can see there is snow forecast between now and when we are scheduled to visit Okuhida Onsen Shinhotaka Onsen.
Does anybody know how well / frequently the roads are cleared and whether trying to drive there in a 2-wheel drive rental car without winter tyres is a sensible proposition?
I've seen warnings against trying it in winter but not sure whether this extends to early April? The rental company have said we can get winter tyres for a substantial additional fee, but if it's thick snow then I guess we'd need snow chains?
Any advice gratefully received. Thanks in advance.
