Eastern Hokkaido by car, departure city?

Hi,
I have been to Hokkaido various times, but only explored southern and part of central Hokkaido before. I would like to see the eastern part this summer, by renting a car from some of the bigger cities there.
My plan is to fly to Memanbetsu or Kushiro airport, but not sure which would be the best place to start from. The marchlands of Kushiro is no interest really, I would much like to see the Akan lakes and the Shiretoko peninsula though.
After that my intent is to do a day hike in the Daisetsuzan and possibly go to Sapporo and down to Aoimori for the festivals there, either by train or flight.
