Jalan vs Toyota car rental fee differences 2019/4/7 06:19
Dear All:

I was trying to reserve a car rental for this coming June in Hokkaido. I initially booked it directly from the rental company (Toyota Rent-a-Car). However, I noticed a few days ago, I can book a Toyota rental through Jalan as well; with a combination of Jalan coupon plus an early special price -- a discount that isn't available directly from Toyota (I even checked Toyota rental's website in Japanese that there were no price discrimination) -- reduced the rental fee by nearly 30% (that is with exactly the same insurance and car options, picking up at the very same Toyota rental outlet). The price difference is not small, hence I am actually worried that I am getting too good of a deal.

Should I be worried at all? This is the first time I book things through Jalan (I got a few hotel reservations through them for this trip). It will be shocking Toyota and/or Jalan cancel the reservation (presuming Toyota really values its reputation). Am I good to go with just the Jalan reservation and the necessary official docs (International Driving Permit and my regular driving license)?

Thank you
SteveC

Jalan and Toyota car rent have a business partnership, so your concerns are meaningless.
There is no difference in rental procedures and rules.

I guess the question is why Jalan can sold discount packages that isnft sold by original vendor.

I guess it is great for the consumer.

I have used Jalan extensively for booking hotels and never had any issue. Very reliable.

Enjoy your trip to Hokkaido!

I have used Jalan to find hotels and ryokans in the past but I tend to book directly with hotel after I find a place I like. This is first time I actually booked hotel (and car rental) through them.

This is mostly because I have a feeling most agents tend to cut a fee and I feel fairer if I can pay directly to local hotel operators (and the local operators sell good packages). Of course the above doesnft apply to big car rental companies like Toyota (I hope I didnft sound too gsocialisth).

This is first time that I find a ryokan that I like without means of booking online directly with them.

No, don't you worry!
I have done many times renting cars thru Jalan. The rates are always better than renting directly.
Instead of Toyota, try Orix. Last time I got new model Honda, better than Toyota in the same category, and lots cheaper than Toyota.

Now I have read some fine print and how I did my reservations in the past. In the past I reserved directly from Toyota because I was directed from my airline website from my air mileage plan gives me a 5% discount plus an additional mile reward. According to the rules, reservations through travel agent packages or the use of discounts that are not offered from Toyota nor the airline itself are excluded from accruing air miles nor you can claim the 5% discount.

So it is a choice of a much smaller airline discount plus a couple hundred of air miles vs a much larger rental rate reduction with no air miles (but I get Jalan points instead). I think I will stick with the cheaper rental plus potentially cheaper future Japan hotel stays.
