Tattoos and bodybuilding in Japan 2019/4/13 01:47
Hello all,

I will be working in Japan, and I am a bit concerned about the tattoo discrimination. One of the worst things i've discovered is that apparently gyms will ban people with tattoos from even working out there. I am a competitive bodybuilder with a full sleeve tattoo. Here in the USA it's almost abnormal for other lifters not to have tattoos than to have them. I'm wondering, does anyone have experience with being an avid gym goer and having lots of tattoos? Will it really be that difficult for me to find a gym to go to just because I have tattoos?

Tattoo is a stigma in japan. Whether you like it or not.
But things are getting better, businesses are more open towards it, especially with the coming rugby world cup and olympic.

That being said, finding a gym that accept tattoo is still PISA.
Most will ask you to coverup the expose tattoo.

Have a look at above link.
Also it would help if you could at least narrow down the place where you'll be working so that people can make better recommendation.

A good read on gym in japan for foreigner.

hey mate!

im also bodybuilder and want to move to japan for 1 year.
the same problem was in my head and the only solution for that problem will be to train with a pullover.
so the gym times with tanktops or stringer will be over when you move to japan.

well, long sleeves will only work if you never use the shower or the changing room in the gym...

A quick Google search tells me that hiring a private instructor is about the only solution as for now.
