Multiple JR bus lines operate on that route. Together they create about 4-5 departures per hour:

The timetables of the more frequent lines are the following:

This is a very handy bus if you have a JR pass. For some reason, not many people know about it or use it. If you are just going to the main downtown tourist area (Omicho Market, Korinbo, Art Museum, Kenrokuen) it is generally a lot better than using the tourist loop buses that everyone seems to favor. (They are very crowded and look unpleasant to me, whereas the JR buses have always been uncrowded the half-dozen times Ifve taken them, and very civilized.)

If you go to the bus information center in front of the station (that is, outside the station, not the tourist information center inside the station), you can get a printed schedule in English (which will also give you the times for buses coming back). Make sure you tell them you want the schedule for the JR buses. The buses leave pretty often at most times of day.

The bus stop for the JR buses is on the left after you exit the station. There are a couple of different (adjacent) boarding spots, I believe. Last time I was there they had improved the signage in English and it was pretty easy to figure out which of the buses you can take (it used to be a little confusing), and what time they leave. Itfs actually very easy if you are just going to Omicho Market. (If you want to go to Kenrokuen, then you have to be careful not to get on the wrong bus, but I believe all of them start out by going past Omicho Market, before splitting routes.)

If you have any doubts, you can always ask the bus driver when you board the bus. You show your pass when you get off, and at that time you might want to ask the driver to point out the bus stop for returning.
