Time available to change of status in Japan

The question is very simple. How many days do I have to change my status with the immigration in Japan before my current visa expires?
I have read that I have to apply for the change of status at least 5 days before my current visa expires.
I want to know if this is true or not.

You have to successfully submit the application on the day your current status expires at the latest. Of course the immigration office has to be open on that day.
