I am not sure what you are looking for – instead of Facebook Messenger or Whatup, many Japanese use LINE. There are many groups on Facebook in Japanese language too. Mixi has been the favorite social networking site in Japan, but it is no longer that popular.

I often chat with my friends via LINE.
Other channels are Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp.
