Nikko travel plans for October 24-25

I'm planning to visit nikko, arriving in midmorning on thursday, october 24. That night, i am staying in a ryokan at lake chuzenji . would it be okay taking a bus from nikko to chuzenji at around 3pm? The next morning I am planning to do my sightseeing in the area before heading back to nikko where i will stay in town that night. I am just worried about the traffic. (I was stuck in a 3 hour jam going from nagoya to kurakuen and i don't want to relive that experience.) I know there will be traffic and crowds, but i want to minimize the chances. Any thoughts and suggestions? Thanks.
