Japanese Alps Itinerary suggestion 2019/6/3 03:19
My family is traveling for 2 weeks with a 7 day JR pass. I would appreciate any suggestions on the last 4 days in the alps.

July 3,4,5,6 - Tokyo
July 7 - Hakone. Plan to buy Hakone Free pass that includes train from shinjuku
July 8 - Train to Hiroshima - JR Day 1
July 9 - Night in Hiroshima - JR Day 2
July 10 - Train to Kyoto - JR Day 3
July 11 - Kyoto - JR Day 4
July 12 - Kyoto - JR Day 5
July 13 - Kyoto - JR Day 6
July 14 - Kyoto to Takayama - JR Day 7 - PASS EXPIRES
July 15,16 - Takayama.
July 17 - Reach Nagoya by night. Sleep near airport
July 18 - Morning flight out

I am trying to figure out what the best itinerary would be from July 14-17. Looking for your recommendations on itinerary and which regional pass makes sense. I have 2 boys 15,10.

Option 1
July 14 - Kyoto to takayama train (covered by JR PASS). Spend the evening in takayama
July 15 - Day trip to shirakawago
July 16 - Day trip to kamikochi or shinhotaka ropeway
July 17 - Matsumoto or a small town in kiso valley and train to Nagoya. Sleep in Nagoya

We could rent a car in takayama if it makes sense? We are used to driving on the "wrong" side of the road. (Is takayama too quiet in the evenings?)

Option 2
July 14 - Kyoto to matsumoto train (covered by JR Pass). Sleep in matsumoto or Shinano-Omachi
July 15 - Shinano omachi to tateyama alpine route. Sleep in toyama or kanazawa
July 16 - Bus to shirakawago and then takayama. Sleep in takayama
July 17 - Morning in takayama and train to Nagoya. Sleep in Nagoya
(Seems too busy with too many hotel changes)

Option 3
Are there any fun adventurous activities that we could do in the area? I heard about family rafting but could not find any in the area.
We are looking for beautiful scenery, sake, onsen and maybe something fun for kids

If you do option 1 you could stay the night at Kamikochi. It will be cooler there, a nice break from the heat. Then the morning at Kamikochi (monkeys before the buses arrive!) then bus to Matsumoto for the castle. We stay at Kamikochi Onsen Hotel. It is nice.

Another would be to stop at Hikone on the way to Takayama. Hikone has a great castle overlooking Lake Biwa. We stay the night there, though maybe your kids wouldnt find as much to do.

Will this be your first time to travel in Japan?

I wonder why you now plan to visit Hiroshima early.

It sounds better if you can fly out one or a few days later,
because Gion Festival Grand Processions of Floats is to be held on July 17.

Correction: Shirakawa-go on the route 2019/6/3 21:24
Shirakawa-go is forgotten in my description of the suggested route.

The part after the Alpine Route should be:
Tateyama -- Toyama --
either Takayama or Gokayama (Ainokura) --
Shirakawa-go -- Kanazawa --
Kyoto -- Hiroshima -- Miyajima --
Kyoto -- Nagoya -- Centrair Airport.

Re: Japanese Alps Itinerary suggestion 2019/6/4 08:45
July 7 - Hakone. Plan to buy Hakone Free pass that includes train from shinjuku

First mistake there. Do not get the pass including the train from Shinjuku, get the FreePass covering from Odawara only otherwise you have just wasted Y1,000 on the return trip you will never take.

Re: tickets for the Hida - Hokuriku - Kyoto leg 2019/6/4 11:26
JR Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass seems more expensive
than the regular tickets
for Toyama -- Takayama -- Shirakawa-go -- Kyoto -- Tsuruga OR
for Toyama -- Shin-Takaoka -- Ainokura -- Shirakawa-go -- Kyoto -- Tsuruga.

It sounds better cost-wise to travel with regular tickets.

You can save the cost
by taking non-express trains from Toyama to Takayama OR
by going without seat reservation from Toyama to Shin-Takaoka.

The section west beyond Tsuruga until Miyajima
is covered by JR-West Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass.
