Where would be a good place to stop for the night other than Lake Toya?

Consider looking at Googlemaps... see which route it shows, expand the view, or then search for hotels, you'd be surprised what it shows..
sometimes quite interesting to stay in the 'smaller towns'.
Driving From Hakodate to Niseko is 2h38m; for another hour, you'd arrive to Otaru anyways.

Noboribetsu is too far to the east. I agree Niseko is good. If you are planning to drive Hwy 230 there is the Rusutsu Resort Hotel closer to Lake Toya, and Jozankei Onsen just outside Sapporo but close to Otaru.

According to Google the other option is Hwy 229 but there doesn't seem to be a lot of hotel options. I agree with the respondent above, look at Google Maps and see the little pink logos identifying hotels.
