From Tokyo to Hakone to Fuji? 2019/6/25 10:37
Need suggestions for an easier route to use and cheap option for a 3-day visit:
1) from Tokyo to Hakone, then continue to Fuji Five Lakes, and back to Tokyo/Shinjuku?
Or Tokyo to Fuji Five Lakes first, then to Hakone, and back to Tokyo/Shinjuku?

2) Can you also kindly explain how does the route connection works, bus or train, or combination of both?
I will spend one night at Hakone and one night at Fuji Five Lakes each.

3) Any Day Pass that will cover those routes?

Thanks.

Hi!

Depending on your exact plans, you probably want something like the following pass:
https://www.odakyu.jp/english/passes/fujihakone/

It is 3 days, covers transport from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto and/or Kawaguchiko and then from one of the following back to Shinjuku. It also covers transit within Hakone-Yumoto and Kawaguchiko. There are suggested itineraries.

Depending on what else you want to do, there could be cheaper options, but there aren't any other passes that are going to cover everything. Hakone passes only go to Gotemba. The one day Kawaguchiko Pass is 5500 yen for 1 day.

In general, it is cheaper to get to Kawaguchiko by bus. It is cheaper to use Odakyu going to or from Hakone vs. taking the shinkansen to Odawara.

Good luck!

Thanks rkold for your suggestions and links.

It seems like Odakyu have got a variety of freepass to there. The Fuji Hakone 3 day pass looks good. I wonder if anyone has used that before and have anything to say or share about the pass.

Basically the Fuji-Hakone Pass will cover all your necessary transports.

Simply speaking, these are what's covered by the pass (the Shinjuku round-trip version for 9,090 Yen):
- Shinjuku to Hakone by Odakyu Railways (Romance Car will charge you a supplement fee)
- All of Hakone Round Course https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5210.html as long as you take the ones that are covered by the pass (e.g. take the Hakone sightseeing boats instead of Izu-Hakone sightseeing boats)
- Hakone to Kawaguchiko (through Gotemba) by buses
- Fujikyu Railways and some buses in Kawaguchiko including the very useful omni buses
- Kawaguchiko to Shinjuku by Fujikyu/Keio Bus

Cheap option is actually not use the pass and do the individual tickets - depends on how much actual sightseeing you are doing to determine if the passes are value for money. Also, to save money, avoid the expensive (and sometimes unnecessary) transport options such as the Romance Car train, ropeway and Ashinoko boat. Skipping those three and using the trains/buses is cheaper.
