A day and night: Hakone and Kawaguciko

We want to have a day +night from tokyo to Hakone and Kawaguchiko (staying the night). Then back to tokyou and catching a train to Kyoto.
would renting a car for that day would be advisable ? Where is best to rent the car? What is the best order (start with Hakone?).

No need to go back to Tokyo.
You could hire a car from Odawara or Mishima station areas.
