I'm guessing you are coming as tourist and plan to rent a car. Then as other have said you'll need an IDP. Make a trip down to JPJ and get one. Make sure you Malaysian driving license is valid/not expired and also IDP must be used together with your Malaysian license. https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4727698Thing will be slightly different if you are driving not as tourist but resident/staying long term. Convert to Japanese driving license. http://www.jaf.or.jp/e/translation/switch.htm

Hello,
I'm going on a business trip to Japan. But I'm not sure how and where to rent a car and whether my American license is valid there. Also: are there any driving schools in Japan where you can hire an instructor for a day or two (who will be able to drive you to the places you need, but it's not actually your driver).

You cannot drive in Japan with an American driving license. You need to get an IDP (International Driving Permit) to drive in Japan. Why you want to go for a Japanese driving school is still unclear, what do you exactly expect from the driving school.
There are companies in Japan you can hiring as your personal driver. But most are focused on tours.
It is expensive but if you do not mind you can go to google and find many.

If you want a driver, irrespective of relationship, if you pay them a single yen for any service they need a class 2 (passenger carrying endorsement). As you are from the US you need to get away from the mindset of using a car - slow, painful, expensive and a PITA.

JohnGraham,
For you to be able to drive in Japan, youfd need an international driving permit (IDP). Please be sure to get it.
Sure there are such driving ginstructorsh available, but with "instructor," youfll be the driver (the instructor will be in the passenger's seat, with an emergency brake), you will need the IDP in any case. If you want a driver to take you around, thatfs private hired car/taxi service, not an instructor.
If you are coming on a business trip, well I donft know the locations you want to get to, but you are advised to use public transportation as much as possible.

Many Japanese hire a taxi service for the day. You get a taxi and the driver for a 4- or 8-hour price, which varies from place to place. You also buy the driver lunch if it's a full day. It's expensive unless you have several people, but convenient and can get you to isolated areas if you don't want to drive yourself. You can hire them yourself online for the cheapest prices, but you sometimes have to know Japanese, or use a 3rd party service to book them for you such as https://easytraveljapan.com/tour-package/tokyo
