We are planning to take the train to Nikko from Tokyo for the day. Is it possible to see the sites just walking around on our own or should we hire a guide?

We had a lovely (freezing) day in Nikko by ourselves. Took the bus up to the temple area, had a wander around, went to the Imperial Villa, delicious noodle lunch at a tiny restaurant behind the villa, wander through town and home.
No idea what we missed but we enjoyed ourselves!
