Data sim for Japan 2019/9/25 00:24
Hello, I will be travelling to Japan for 13 days and noted that I can buy a data SIM card in Australia for $59Aud valid over 30 days with 7GB. I just wonder if itfs cheaper to buy in Japan.
Also, can I just turn up and buy the sim at Fukuoka airport?

Thank you very much for any inputs....

hi,

You can buy data sim cards at the airport, they come in 7 day or 14 day options, im pretty sure there are other options aswel, and the nice thing is they come in vending machines, so very convenient.

Il be landing at narita and will get me a 14 day data sim, just so much easier, i think the 14 day goes for 4000JPY.

But im pretty sure wherever you are landing there will be a data sim card available.

I would say rather buy the sim card in japan at the airport.

Hi, TP.
I'm a Japanese working in Tokyo for over a decade.
Let me answer to your question.

Firstly, let me comment on "buy a data SIM card in Australia for $59Aud valid over 30 days with 7GB."

When you look at its price and conditions alone, I'm sure to say that is reasonable.

However, when you use it, it might be good if you take about connectivities like: Can that Australian SIM card can get frequencies in Japan?

You can get more knowledge from articles like this.

Useful Knowledge to Use Internet in Japan: 5 Networks of Pocket WiFi / Prepaid SIM Card https://pocketwifi.me/wifi/366

Other than that, as Frankie said to you, you can buy a prepaid SIM card in lots of airports in Japan, including Fukuoka airport.

One thing I would like to add that.
Although it depends, you might able to get more benefits if you rent a SIM card rather than buying a prepaid SIM card. It's more reasonable, reliable, and refundable.

A brief comparison can read at:

Hope you'll get a wonderful experience in Japan.

I would like to ask (maybe stupid question, but still...) - can I use such SIM (rental or prepaid) also in my laptop (with my internet stick)? At home I have local SIM in this stick, to use all over EU - but not outside.

Hi girlwithpearl. There's no stupid questions at all, this board is made to solve such questions.

>can I use such SIM (rental or prepaid) also in my laptop (with my internet stick)?

Technically, yes. However again, you should confirm compatibility between your device & a SIM card and frequencies in Japan.

I just don't know about that "internet stick," though. Is you laptop doesn't have any slots for SIM cards?

It would be great that you'll add a link to the same kind of product here so that I can confirm.

Thank you so much Gatigati.... Much appreciate your input with regards to this...

The sim card sold in Australia i think is pretty much similar to what is offered by Mobal in Japan.... It uses Docomo 4G network and it seems to me that the price is quite similar...

I think it may be easier to just turn up and get it at the airport you think?....

Many thanks

Re: Data sim for Japan 2019/9/30 07:49

Thank you Tp for your information. Now I can see the whole picture.
I can agree with that you use that SIM card, which will work in Japan because it uses Docomo 4G network.

Yet you can go with that, however if you have more time to consider, we have two three options to consider

1. Is your device (a mobile phone/a laptop) compatible with frequencies in Japan?
2. If you take some more time to do research, Japan has more SIM card options, which are tend to be more reasonable in perspective of cost/days.

3. You may want to rent a SIM card because they can give you a refund when you find that your device can not compatible with Japan's frequencies.

Hi Gatigati,

What I mean is USB stick, where I place the SIM.

Re: Data sim for Japan 2019/10/1 22:52
Hi girlwithpearl, again. Thank you for the info, now I got a whole picture.

Let me advise you some.

First, about HUAWEI 4G Dongle E3372 itself.
According to the website you showed me, some bands of them are compatible with Japan's (FDD: DD800 / 2100). So, I can say that it looks like okay to get connected in Japan, technically.

However, I cannot confirm that you will get connected completely with the internet in Japan.

Because;
"HUAWEI 4G Dongle E3372" is a bit rare device in Japan.

Can't clear the "conformity mark" issue as written in the following https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravel/comments/5u9mot/visitor_sim_card_...

A SIM card you'll select is compatible with "HUAWEI 4G Dongle E3372"?

So, in that perspective, I recommend you buying or renting a SIM card or a WiFi router provided in Japan.
