From Kagoshima to Oita?

I'm currently living in Kagoshima, and would like to visit Oita from October 31st until November 2nd. My problem is, I just found out there're no train or bus that go directly to Oita.
Do you have any advice where should I go first to transfer to Oita? or if you have a recommended place in Kyushu around that time that you think more convenience, I would like to hear it to.

Train with a transfer at Miyazaki
Bus with a transfer at Kumamoto

Fastest would be shinkansen to Kokura and then express to Oita.
or slightly slower but more scenic:
Shinkansen to Kurume and the Yufuin no Mori to Oita
as well as the route through Miyazaki.

I'm currently living in Kagoshima, and would like to visit Oita from October 31st until November 2nd.If you are a foreign student, you can use JR Kyushu's Foreign Student Pass. https://www.jrkyushu.co.jp/tabi/2011_study_abroad_pass/You can use most of JR rail including Kyushu shinkansen, but note that this pass does not cover Hakata to Kokura shinkansen section since this section is in the JR West area.
