Is JR Train affected by Typhoon? 2019/10/14 21:17
Hi All ,

May I ask if the JR train is affected by the typhoon ?
The last time I checked from Osaka to Hitachi Seaside Park is less than 4 hours but today I check is it 11 hours .

The same for Osaka to Nikko is also not so long but today it is showing 7 hours .

I have purchased a JR Pass and will be travelling to Japan this Saturday.

Appreciate if you can advise us .

Thank you

The situation has quickly improved, but there are still some train lines that are interrupted.
However, all the JR trains between Osaka and Nikko are running. Also, all the trains between Osaka and Hitachi Seaside Park (Katsuta Station) are running.

For other lines, check the JR pages for more details:

You can check the JR status pages, and that will give some information. Generally the English language pages give worse information/fewer details than the Japanese version.
Currently the main interruption is on the Tokyo to Kanazawa line (between Nagano and Kanazawa), but there is severe damage on some other local lines that tourists are unlikely to use.

They get fixed when they get fixed. Considering the two locations you wanna visit were hit the hardest, I'd suggest they will take a while. But you never know. Japan recovers from most natural disasters quickly due to these things happening on a bi yearly basis. Just keep checking the rail companies websites.

JR East confirmed that hokuriku shinkansen between Nagano to joetsu myoko=60km and Chuo main Line between Takao to otsuki=35km is affected by Typhoon 19 which killed 70 people.

Most train lines have already recovered! Only a very small number of lines is still interrupted. Imran mentioned the two that have the biggest impact. The Hokuriku Shinkansen is expected to resume service along the entire line in 1-2 weeks. There hasn't been an announcement about when the Chuo Line is expected to be back in service. But again, neither disruption has an impact on your trip between Osaka and Eastern Japan (unless you take some very unusual route).

Considering the two locations you wanna visit were hit the hardest, I'd suggest they will take a while.

Neither the tourtist area of Nikko nor the Hitachi Seaside Park were badly hit. The park and virtually all tourist sites in Nikko are open, and transportation is running normally (except the Tobu Nikko Line, but JR trains will get you there). There is no need to avoid these tourist destinations. To the opposite: an unnecessary absence of tourists is going to cause even more damage.
