Self drive from Fukuoka to Kurokawa Onsen

hello everybody! I'm still planning my upcoming trip to Japan in middle November. I couldn't find an easy way to visit Kurokawa onsen from Fukuoka by train/bus, so I'm thinking about renting a car in Fukuoka on Friday and drive to Kurokawa onsen, staying overnight and the following morning drive back to Fukuoka for the Sumo match (I have already purchased the sumo ticket for that day). Do you think it worth? Are the roads in good condition for a foreigner to drive? or it is a very mountain-like trip?
I accept any suggestion!! thanks

Sound like if you hhave limited time due to sumo. Then yes a car would make sense as itcwill be quicker to access Kurokawa.
Mostly expressway. Or at least half will be.

A car is how I went - a smart choice as well, if you want to go to some of the better hot springs - they are very spread out and a car is the best way - besides, the buses going/coming from there are rather infrequent, and driving is a lot more freedom. https://youtu.be/Xs_JXC6bhkMAnd if you can there in early November, you could also see a lot of the last flowers of the year at the Kuju Flower Park. http://www.hanakoen.com
