Is it possible to travel from Kyoto to Mt Fuji for a day trip? Do I need to get JR pass?

You are returning to Kyoto the same day? If so, then yes, it's a waste of time, especially in the autumn and winter months when the sun sets very early. The transport logistics isn't the best and to be there just for a portion (a small portion) of one day seems rather pointless. What do you wish to do there?
