Hello,
I will be traveling from Nagoya to Takayama on December 22nd, and then from Takayama to Kyoto on December 25th (via Nagoya).
I am trying to figure out how to do this and saving money. I believe the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass does not allow me to travel from Nagoya to Kyoto, so I was looking at the 7-day national JR Pass but that's still so much money just to get between these cities. What is the best way to travel from Takayama through to Kyoto, via Nagoya?

The best way and the cheapest way are two different things.
The best way (in my opinion) is to take trains (because it is fastest and most comfortable):
Takayama - (limited express) - Nagoya - (shinkansen) - Kyoto
Regular tickets will come cheaper than any pass.
The cheapest way is to take buses:
Takayama - (bus) - Nagoya - (bus) - Kyoto
