Which rail pass to purchase 2019/12/4 16:40
Hello,
I am planning for my trip to Japan early next year and is not certain which rail pass should I purchase. Summary of my itinerary is as below:-

Day 1: Kansai airport (10:00pm) - Shinsaibashi st.
Day 2: Nara - Osaka
Day 3: Osaka - Dotonbori
Day 4: Osaka - Kyoto
Day 5: Kyoto
Day 6: Kyoto - Takayama
Day 7: Shirakawago
Day 8: Takayama - Nagoya
Day 9: NGO airport (11.00am)

Your kind assistance is very much appreciated. Thank you!

No pass for Kyoto and Osaka. It's cheap to travel between those cities.

From day 6 on, I might just take the bus if you are looking for a deal:

You have to take the bus to Shirakawago anyway. Your journey from Day 6-8 to would only be about 10500 yen on the Bus. If you took the train it would be closer to 20000 yen and not save a lot of time (about an hour).

There is a pass that covers your trip but it requires going over the top through Toyama and that is going to be slower than the bus and more expensive. https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361_takayama_hokuriku.html

I would say none. You are moving between regions so local passes usually do not apply, and you are not travelling long distances. Keep the flexibility of single tickets - you can book in advance (online) for the trains that need reservations.

Hello Caren,

If you have in mind buying a Japan Rail, and after checking your itinerary, I don't think it pays off. But of course, it depends on how much you want to travel on long-distance trips. What I recommend you is to check all your itineraries on Hyperdia to be sure what pass is the one you need. Maybe this guide can help you: https://www.jrailpass.com/hyperdia. It's explained step by step how this travel tool works.

I hope my advice is helpful!

Yet another thinly-disguised advertisement for the website (based in Spain) linked above...
